What is llms.txt?
The llms.txt file is a short text file placed at the root of your website (for example: https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that gives some direction to large language model systems (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude about how your website content may be used. Espiolabs research
It’s similar in concept to the classic robots.txt file (which guides search-engine crawlers), but focused on AI tools rather than just search engines. Semrush resource
Important note: At present, there is no confirmed, widespread adoption of llms.txt by all major AI systems—so it’s a proactive, forward-thinking step rather than a guaranteed boost. Entail resource
Why you might want to use it
It shows you’re thinking ahead, positioning your website for the next wave of AI-driven search/recommendations.
By giving AI tools a clear, simplified version of your site’s important content, you reduce the chance of them misinterpreting or incorrectly summarising your information.
It gives you some control: you can indicate whether AI tools are allowed to use or reference your content (or specific pages) in certain ways.

What the private, login-protected line does
We do *not* permit usage of our private, login-protected or proprietary materials.
It doesn’t block anything — AI crawlers can’t read private or login-protected pages anyway.
Instead, it acts as a disclaimer/signal that tells AI systems (and any human reviewers) that your permission applies only to public, open pages.
It mirrors the approach many major websites (like news publishers and universities) are taking in their
llms.txt— a kind of “content-use boundaries” statement. So functionally, it doesn’t change anything. But including it makes your file more explicit, professional, and aligned with early llms.txt conventions seen across reputable organisations.
