What are GTM and GA4? and How do GA4 and GTM Work Together
Advanced steps: Checking your codes are correct
How to fix your connection if it is incorrect
If you’ve received this notification when connecting the Google Analytics Dashboard, a Google Tag Manager code (GTM) was detected on your website. There may be no issues but checking your GTM Tracking code is recommended to avoid your graph displaying incorrect data.
This code can be found within the "Get Found SEO" section of the dashboard and will look similar to the below example. You will want to check that your GTM code entered through Rocketspark is correctly linked to your Google Analytics code through Google's platform.

What are GTM and GA4?
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google’s analytics platform that stores website data such as page views and user behaviour.
- Google Tag Manager (GTM) lets you manage marketing tags to track actions like button clicks or video plays on your website. It’s also commonly used with Google Ads to analyse data.
How GA4 and GTM Work Together
-
Connecting GTM Within GA4 Option: GTM becomes the tool for managing all your tracking (e.g., page views, button clicks, form submissions), which is then sent to GA4 for reporting.
-
Connecting GA4 Within GTM Option: In GTM, you can create tags specifically designed for GA4 (e.g., a GA4 Configuration Tag or Event Tags). These tags link GTM to your GA4 property. This setup ensures that any actions tracked in GTM are forwarded to GA4 for reporting.
Once you have connected your Google Analytics Account to your Rocketspark dashboard, quickly check if you can see any website sessions on the graph.
If there is data displaying on your graph, further log into your Google Analytics account to see if what displays through Rocketspark matches what is seen through the Google platform. If all matches, there is nothing to worry about with the GTM and GA4 connection.
If there is no data displaying on your graph or if the graph does not reflect what is seen through Google Analytics platform, this may indicate that there are issues with the GTM being incorrectly linked to GA4. See the advanced steps below or get in touch with an SEO expert.

*If you have had a designer or SEO partner set up your Google tools, please check in first with your partner before changing any settings.
Your GTM Configuration Tag's Measurement ID should exactly match the GA4 property ID under Admin > Data Streams in Google Analytics.
Step 1. Checking in Google Tag Manager (GTM) if GA4 is Connected Correctly
- Go to Google Tag Manager and sign in.
- Navigate to the Tags tab in the GTM dashboard.
- Look for a tag labelled GA4 Configuration Tag or other GA4-related tags.
- Click on the tag to view its details.
- Confirm the following:
- The Tag Type is set to Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration.
- The Measurement ID matches your GA4 property ID (you can find this ID in Google Analytics under Admin > Data Streams > Web).
- Additional step: You can click Preview to test the tag.
Step 2. Checking in Google Analytics (GA4) if GTM is Sending Data
- Go to Google Analytics and sign in.
- Navigate to Admin > Data Streams and click on your web data stream.
- Confirm that the Measurement ID listed here matches the one configured in GTM
- Additional step: Go to Admin > DebugView.
- Open your website in GTM’s preview mode (or use the GA Tag Assistant browser extension).
- In DebugView, Verify that data sent via GTM appears correctly in DebugView (e.g., page views, events) is appearing.
- Go to Configure > Events.
- Verify that events sent via GTM (e.g., "page_view," "click") appear in the event list.
When looking through both platforms (GTM and GA) and if the codes displayed are matching, there is nothing needed for you to change.
How to fix your connection if it is incorrect
If the codes do not match, make sure that you adjust the GTM Configuration Tag's Measurement ID to match the GA4 property ID in Google Analytics. Save and publish the changes in GTM to ensure data flows correctly.

- Go to Google Tag Manager and open the container associated with your website.
- navigate to the Tags tab.
- Look for the tag labelled GA4 Configuration Tag and click on it.
- In the Tag Configuration section, locate the Measurement ID field.
- Replace the existing ID with the correct GA4 Measurement ID you found in Step 1.
- After updating the Measurement ID, click the Save button.
