Google Tag Manager enables digital marketers to set up advanced tracking throughout your website, on a specific page or for a specific campaign. This help guide explains how to add Google Tag Manager tracking to a Rocketspark website.
NOTE: Jump to this section if you have already had Google Tag Manager set up before September 2020.
- Get your Google Tag Manager Tracking ID or GTM Number.
- Back on Rocketspark go to the Get Found (SEO) section in your dashboard. On the right-hand side find the Google Tracking Code section and toggle it to Tag Manager. Paste in your container ID and click Save (it should look something like GTM-ABC1234).
This will automatically install the <head> and <body> tracking codes on to every page of your website.
Set up Tags, Triggers and Variables in Tag Manager
Rocketspark’s platform will fire a range of events and Enhanced Ecommerce dataLayer actions which require a Tag Manager Triggers and Tags to be set up to interpret these events and pass them on to your Analytics account.
We've created the following container export of settings which you can use to import into your Tag Manager container to automatically set up all of the Tags, Triggers and Variables.
- Download our container template file here.
- Go to the Downloads folder and open the File in your Text Editor to be able to edit the file.
- Use the Find tool in your chosen editor (usual CMD+F or CTRL+F) and find 'G-XXXXXXXXX-X'. Replace this string with your Google Analytics Tracking ID between the double-quotes. (Follow our guide here to find your GA4 tracking ID). Save the .json file.
- Create a new Web container by going to Admin and clicking Import Container
- Choose the container template file you downloaded in step 1 and saved with your UA tracking ID at step 2.
- Choose whether you are merging or overwriting. If you have existing container tags setup we recommend you to do a merge. If you have a new container with nothing configured yet we recommend to overwrite. Also, choose to upload to a new or existing workspace.
- You will be presented with a preview of the changes that will happen.
- Submit and Publish your changes. Find the Submit button at the top right.
What should I do if I have previously had Google Tag Manager set up before September 2020?
If you or a digital expert you're working with previously added some advanced tracking code in the <head> or <body> section under Get Found (SEO) in your dashboard for Google Tag Manager, follow the instructions below:
If you are selling online:

In order to do that, you will need to delete the code from the <head> or <body> section and instead, simply paste your GTM code to the new Tag Manager field following the steps shown above in this help guide.
If you are not selling online:
You can choose to add Google Analytics tracking through Google Tag Manager in an easier way as shown above in this help guide. NB. If you choose to do so, it's important to remove the existing code from the <head> or <body> section as not to duplicate the tracking.
