If you've registered a new domain or changed your business name, and you have a Google Workspace subscription through Rocketspark, you'll probably want your email to match your new domain too. The good news is you don't have to sort this out yourself. Get in touch and we'll update the domain on your Google Workspace subscription for you, and set up a forward so nothing sent to your old address gets missed.
Updating your email address after a domain change
When your main website address (your domain name) changes, your Google Workspace email doesn't update automatically. So if your address was admin@olddomain.com and your new domain is newdomain.com, your email stays on the old domain until we update it.
To get it changed over, send us an email at support@rocketspark.com and let us know what you'd like updated. We'll take care of the rest.
There are two common ways people update their email, so it helps to tell us which one you're after:
A straightforward domain swap.
The part before the @ stays the same, only the domain changes. For example, admin@olddomain.com becomes admin@newdomain.com.
A domain swap and a new email name.
You change the domain and the part before the @ at the same time. For example, admin@olddomain.com becomes hello@newdomain.com.
Both are fine, we only need to know which you'd like so we set it up correctly the first time.
What to include in your email to us
To help us action your request without back-and-forth, please include:
- Your current Google Workspace email address, or addresses if there's more than one (for example admin@olddomain.com)
- The new domain you'd like to use (for example newdomain.com)
- Whether you'd like a straightforward swap (same name before the @) or a different email name as well
- A quick confirmation that you'd like a forward set up from your old domain
What happens to your emails, contacts and calendar
Your Google Workspace account stays exactly as it is. All of your existing emails, contacts, calendar events and Google Drive files are kept. We're changing the address on your account, not creating a new one, so nothing inside it is lost.
We'll also set up a forward from your old domain. That means anyone who emails your old address, from a saved contact, an old business card, or an out-of-date listing, still reaches your updated account. The forward keeps working for as long as you keep your old domain registered with us.
Do I need to set up my new domain first?
Your new domain needs to be in your Rocketspark account before we make the switch. Once it's there, we can make it your primary domain and update your Google Workspace email at the same time, so it all happens in one go. How you get the domain into your account depends on your situation:
Registering a brand new domain.
Register the domain first, then get in touch. Once it's in your account, we'll make it your primary domain and update your email together.
Transferring a domain you already own elsewhere.
We can make it your primary domain too, but for a smooth switch it's best to have the domain transferred into your account first.
Not sure how to do either of those? Our guides on registering a new domain and transferring a domain to Rocketspark walk you through it. Once your new domain is in your account, send us the details and we'll line up the primary domain switch and your email update together.
Tips and things to watch out for
- Let us know sooner rather than later if you print business cards, signage or listings with your new email on them, so your new address is live when you need it.
- If you have more than one Google Workspace user on your domain, list all of the addresses you'd like updated so none get left behind.
- Keep your old domain registered if you'd like the email forward to keep working. If the old domain lapses, the forward stops with it.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my emails, contacts or calendar when the domain changes?
No. Everything in your Google Workspace account is retained. We change the domain on your existing account, so your emails, contacts, calendar and Drive files all stay in place.
Does it cost anything to change the domain on my Google Workspace?
No, there's no cost to update the domain on your Google Workspace subscription.
Will emails sent to my old address still reach me?
Yes. We set up a forward from your old domain to your new email, so messages sent to the old address still come through. It keeps working for as long as your old domain stays registered.
Can I change the part before the @ as well, not just the domain?
Yes. Let us know the exact address you'd like, for example hello@newdomain.com, and we'll set it up when we make the change.
Do I need to register the new domain first before I email you?
Yes. Your new domain needs to be in your Rocketspark account first, whether you're registering a brand new one or transferring one you already own. Once it's in your account, get in touch and we'll make it your primary domain and update your email at the same time.
