Outlook can connect with your Google Workspace email, letting you read and send messages through the Outlook interface while your Google account continues to manage your login and security.
Because Outlook is a third-party app, we’re not able to provide IT support for their platform — but we can help guide you through what you should expect to see and what to check if things don’t go quite to plan.
What you should expect when signing in
When you add a Google Workspace account to Outlook, you should be redirected to a Google login screen.
You’ll normally be prompted to:
Enter your full Google Workspace email address.
Enter your Google password.
Approve the connection between Google and Outlook.
Once that’s done, Outlook pulls your email through using Google’s secure sign-in process.
If this Google login window doesn’t appear, something is preventing Outlook from launching the Google sign-in flow — in that case, try the checks below.
If the Google login screen doesn’t appear
1. If you’re signing in through a web browser
A few simple checks often fix this:
Update your browser to the latest version. Older browsers can block or break Google’s authentication flow.
Check for extensions or plugins that could interfere — especially ad-blockers, privacy tools, or anything that limits pop-ups.
Disable blocking for pop-ups and redirects just while you connect your account.
-
Try another browser to confirm whether the issue is browser-specific.
2. If you’re using the Outlook desktop app or mobile app
Outlook’s apps rely on Microsoft’s built-in sign-in experience, so you’ll want to check:
Update the Outlook app (desktop or mobile). Older versions often fail to launch modern Google sign-in.
-
Check you’re not using “Legacy Outlook” on Windows.
Microsoft officially removed the ability to connect Google accounts to the legacy version of Outlook in May 2024.
This means:You cannot add a Google Workspace account to Legacy Outlook anymore.
You’ll need to use the “New Outlook” experience or the Outlook web app instead.
Restart Outlook after updating — Outlook sometimes won’t trigger the correct login flow until it restarts.
-
Check your device’s system updates, as outdated system components can interfere with secure sign-in windows.
Other common things to check
Here are a few more issues we’ve seen people run into:
Two-factor authentication
If 2FA is required for your Google Workspace account (most are these days), make sure you have your authentication method ready — Outlook will trigger it during login.
Blocked third-party access
Google Workspace admins can block external apps from connecting. If you manage your Workspace admin console, check that:
-
“Allow users to access third-party apps with Google sign-in” is enabled.
Incorrect password or old saved credentials
If Outlook keeps trying to log in with the wrong saved password, you may need to:
Remove the email account from Outlook.
Restart Outlook.
Add the account again.
Firewall or antivirus tools
Some security tools block login pop-ups or OAuth screens. Temporarily pause them (if safe to do so), connect your account, then turn them back on.

Because Outlook and Google are third-party platforms, the exact steps can change without notice. This guide is accurate at the time of creation (November 2025), but updates from Microsoft or Google may mean things look a little different in future.
