Your browser cache is a temporary storage area that saves parts of websites you’ve recently visited. This helps pages load faster when you return to them.
Most of the time, caching is a good thing
But occasionally it can cause your browser to show an older (“stale”) version of a page — even when the website has been updated. When that happens, clearing your cache usually fixes the issue straight away.
Below are steps for clearing the cache in the most common browsers.
google chrome
- Open Chrome
- Click the three dots in the top-right corner
- Select Settings
- Go to Privacy and security
- Click Clear browsing data
- In the Time range, choose All time
- Tick Cached images and files
- Untick everything else
- Click Clear data
Close Chrome completely, then reopen it.
mozilla firefox
- Open Firefox
- Click the menu button (☰) in the top-right corner
- Select Settings
- Go to Privacy & Security
- Scroll to Cookies and Site Data
- Click Clear Data
- Tick Cached web content
- Untick everything else
- Click Clear
Restart Firefox after clearing the cache.
safari (mac)
Safari handles cache a little differently.
option 1: clear cache only (recommended)
- Open Safari
- Click Safari in the menu bar
- Select Settings (or Preferences)
- Go to Advanced
- Tick Show Develop menu in menu bar
- Close settings
- Click Develop in the menu bar
- Select Empty Caches
option 2: clear history (clears more than just cache)
- Click Safari in the menu bar
- Select Clear History
- Choose a time range
- Click Clear History
This option also clears cookies and may sign you out of websites.
microsoft edge
- Open Edge
- Click the three dots in the top-right corner
- Select Settings
- Go to Privacy, search, and services
- Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear
- Set Time range to All time
- Tick Cached images and files
- Untick everything else
- Click Clear now
Restart Edge once finished.
a quick extra tip
After clearing your cache:
- Refresh the page
- Or try a hard refresh
- Windows:
Ctrl + F5 - Mac:
Cmd + Shift + R
- Windows:
This forces the browser to load the latest version of the page.
what about internet explorer?
Internet Explorer has been fully retired by Microsoft and is no longer supported by modern websites, including Rocketspark. If you’re still using it, we recommend switching to a newer browser like Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari for the best experience.
