Yes, you can change and customise your products in your store either by marking the products as "featured" or manually through a product import CSV file. When you add products to your Rocketspark shop, they will appear alphabetically by default. If your products have a number or an apostrophe at the beginning of the product name, they will be listed at the top of your product list.
There are two ways of changing the order of your products:
Customise the order of non-featured products through CSV import
Feature a product
You can ensure certain products always appear at the top by featuring them. Your featured products will be sorted alphabetically and will be featured both in the main shop view and in any filtered views (such as by a Category, Brand, or Tag).
Alternatively, you can display featured products on your home page or on a landing page with product blocks or Grid Galleries.
To feature a product, follow the instructions below:
Click the star above the product in a Grid or List View. You can locate the shop view options next to your search box:
Or click the star that appears in the Edit Product mode:
Customise the order of non-featured products through CSV import
Yes, you can customise the order of your non-featured products in your store by uploading the product import CSV file. Products marked as "featured" in your store will still appear in alphabetical order and before the manually ordered non-featured products.
Here are the steps for customising the non-featured product order:
If you already have products in your store:
If you already have products in your store, you will want to first export your products as a CSV file which you can do by going to your Manage Store -> Import & Export or check out our help guide here: How do I export a list of my products to CSV. Then head to Step 1 below.
If you are just about to add your first product:
Add your first product to your store and then go to the import/export section in your e-commerce settings and export the CSV file.
- Open the CSV and find the column at the end of the CSV file labelled 'order'.
- Enter a value in the order column for each product to determine the order in which products are displayed. It is important that you enter the order number on the last row of that product.
For Example, if product A has 3 different product variants in the CSV file, this one product will show on three rows e.g row 1, 2 & 3 (due to the different variants). Meaning you will need to add the order number on the last row (row 3). Or add the same order number to all rows of that product (row 1, 2 & 3).
NOTE: You are able to enter in any value that can be positive or negative and includes decimals if you prefer to use them. If a product does not have a value it will be listed in alphabetical order below the manually ordered or 'featured' products.
For example, if your store has four products (A, B, C and D) and you want C to appear before B, you would give C the order 1 and B the order 2. This would result in the products in your store being ordered like C, B, A, D. The A and D come at the end because they weren't given an order, and A comes before D because products are sorted by their name alphabetically after being sorted by order.
What's the point of using a decimal number, like 2.5?
If you've been going through your list of products ordering them and you get up to, say, number 100 before realising that you want the next number to go between 44 and 45, then you can give the product the order 44.1, which will slot it right in where you want it to go.
- Save the updated CSV file and import it back into your store by following our help guide How can I import products into my store?
You should now see your non-featured products in the order that you have selected, if you need to make any changes to the order, you can do so by repeating the above steps—editing the order column in the exported CSV file and importing the updated CSV file into your store.
FAQs
Q: What happens to products I don’t assign an “order” number for?
A: If you leave the “order” column blank in your CSV for some products, they will appear after any manually ordered or “featured” products. Those un-ordered products are then sorted alphabetically by product name.
Q: Can I use decimal or negative numbers in the “order” field of the CSV?
A: Yes — you can use any positive or negative values, including decimals (e.g. 2.5). This helps if you need to insert a product between two existing ones without changing everything else. Negative values are fine too.
Q: If a product has multiple variants, how do I set its order correctly?
A: For products with variants, you need to assign the order number on all rows of that product (or at least the last row). That way the product (with all its variants) appears in the correct position in the listing.
Q: Will my “featured” products always appear first, even if their “order” value is high/low?
A: Yes — featured products are always prioritised. They appear at the top of the product list, and are sorted alphabetically among themselves. Non-featured products with an order value come after the featured ones.
Q: Does changing the order affect filtered views (by brand, category, or tag)?
A: Featured products will show first in any filtered view. Then non-featured products follow the order values assigned via CSV. So yes — custom ordering + featuring both influence product order in filtered views too.
Q: How long does it take for changes to show after importing a CSV with updated order values?
A: Once you re-import the CSV with the updated “order” values, changes should generally appear on the live store soon after the import completes. Depending on caching or site loading, it might take a few minutes. If you still see the old order after some time, try clearing the site cache or viewing in an incognito/private browser.
