You may see that you pay 2 lots of invoices one for website hosting and the other for domain name hosting, these are two separate services. To help you understand the difference between the two and why you need them we have outlined the services below.
What is website hosting?
Website hosting is the platform that you build your website on for example Rocketspark, WordPress, Squarespace or Wix. You can think of this as the house or lot that is rented that hosts all of the files, code and data that make up your website.
What is domain name hosting?
Domain name hosting is the name of your website, for example, our domain name is rocketspark.com, and your domain name will likely be your business name. This can also be seen in the URL bar in your browser:
The domain name is like the directions to your website so that when someone types in your domain name their browser will take them to your website hosting so that your website will show.
There are many different providers for domain names such as Rocketspark, Free Parking, GoDaddy and 1st Domains which are some of the more common domain name hosts/registrars.
Do I need to have both website and domain name hosting?
You will need both a domain name and website hosting in order to have a website showing online - these services can be hosted by different providers or both from the same provider.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to get in touch with us at support@rocketspark.com.
