If you've added custom code to a code block and now your editor won't load, the page goes blank, or you can't click or edit anything, the code is usually the cause. You can pause code blocks in the editor from your Dashboard. That lets you get back in, fix the code, and switch it back on. Your live website stays exactly as it is the whole time.
Fix a broken code block (HTML or embed code)
A code block (also called an HTML block or embed block) runs its code inside the editor as well as on your live website. If the code has a mistake, like a missing closing tag, it can stop the editor working on that page. If the code block is in a linked stack or your sitewide footer, it can affect every page.
When you disable code blocks in the editor, each code block shows as an empty container instead of running its code. You can then click into it and fix it.
Step 1: Disable code blocks in the editor
- Log in to your Dashboard.
- Click Get Found (SEO/AIO) in the left-hand menu.
- Scroll down to Code blocks in the editor. It sits below the Optimise for AI tools (LLMs.txt) section.
- Click the switch so it shows Disabled.
You'll see a green message saying Code blocks disabled. The change saves straight away. You don't need to click Save, as that button belongs to the LLMs.txt section above.
Step 2: Find the code block in the editor
Open the editor and go to the page that wasn't working. Each code block now shows as a grey placeholder labelled Custom code paused. If the block has code in it, the first line of the code shows underneath. That helps you work out which block is the problem if you have more than one.
While code blocks are disabled, you'll also see a notice in the editor reminding you they're paused
Step 3: Fix or remove the code
Click the placeholder to open the code editor, the same as you would normally. Then fix the code and save the block.
Common things to check:
- A missing closing tag. Every
<script>needs a</script>, and every<style>needs a</style>. - A full web page pasted in. Code that includes
<html>,<head>or<body>tags is meant for a whole page, not a code block. Paste only the snippet you were given. - Code from an AI tool. AI-generated code is often incomplete. If you're not sure what's wrong, delete the code and add it again from the original source.
If you'd rather remove the block completely, hover over it and delete it using the block toolbar, like any other block.
Step 4: Turn code blocks back on
Go back to Get Found (SEO/AIO) in your Dashboard and click the switch so it shows Enabled again, or alternatively, click the 'Turn back on' wording from the message in the editor. This will automatically enable to code blocks again.
Check the page in the editor. If it stops working again, there's still a problem with the code. Disable code blocks again and take another look, or contact us and we'll help.
What this setting does and doesn't change
- Your live website isn't affected. Visitors, and Preview mode, still see your code blocks running as normal.
- It covers every code block on your website. That includes code blocks on pages, in linked stacks, in your sitewide footer, in blog posts and in product descriptions.
- It only covers code blocks. Custom code added to your website's sitewide code settings isn't paused. If that code is the problem, contact us and we'll help.
- It applies to everyone editing the website. Partners and anyone with access to Get Found can switch it on and off.
⚠ Because your live website still runs your code, a broken code block can affect what visitors see too. Fix it as soon as you can.
Tips and things to watch out for
- Leave the setting on Enabled day to day. While it's disabled, embedded content like booking widgets, maps or videos won't show in the editor.
- If a code block seems to have vanished from your editor, check whether code blocks are still disabled.
- Before pasting code from an AI tool, check every opening tag has a matching closing tag.
Frequently asked questions
Will disabling code blocks change my live website?
No. It only changes what you see in the editor. Your live website and Preview mode keep running your code as normal.
My code block has disappeared from the editor. Where's it gone?
Code blocks are probably still disabled. Go to Get Found (SEO/AIO) in your Dashboard and set Code blocks in the editor back to Enabled.
Does this pause code on one page or my whole website?
The whole website. Every code block shows as a placeholder in the editor until you enable them again.
I've disabled code blocks but my editor still isn't working. What now?
The problem may be coming from somewhere other than a code block, such as sitewide custom code. Flick us a message with the page that isn't working and we'll take a look.
