If you only have one domain name registered to your Rocketspark account this is by default set to be the primary. A primary domain name is one to which all additional domain names are mapped to. If you have multiple domain names you can select which domain you would like to be the primary domain.
- Log into your Rocketspark Dashboard using your log in details.
- Click Domain Names in the left-hand menu.
- Find the domain you are looking to make your primary domain, click the pencil icon to the left of the domain name.
- Click the Domain Options tab.
- If the selected domain is not already your primary domain, click Make Primary Domain.
- Your domain will have been set to your primary domain. NOTE: You cannot cancel your primary domain, you must register a new domain or set another domain as primary to do so.
FAQs
Q: What happens if I cancel my primary domain?
A: You can’t cancel the domain that’s currently set as your primary. If you want to cancel it, you’ll need to first register or designate another domain as your primary.
Q: Will changing the primary domain affect my site’s SSL (HTTPS)?
A: No, Rocketspark handles SSL for your site. Once the new primary domain is set, it will inherit the SSL configuration — so your site stays secure under HTTPS. (But give it a little time for propagation.)
Q: Do I lose anything (SEO, links, traffic) when I change primary domain?
A: Not within Rocketspark — your existing mapped domains still redirect to the primary. Existing links to those domains continue to work, as long as DNS is set up correctly. But, if you’re changing domain names altogether (i.e. moving from your-old-domain.com to new-domain.com), some SEO implications may apply (e.g. redirects, verifying domain ownership, search indexing).
Q: How long does it take for the new primary domain setting to take effect?
A: It should be effective almost immediately in the Rocketspark dashboard. DNS changes or propagation for some domain registrars can take from a few minutes up to 24-48 hours globally.
Q: Do mapped or alias domains still work once the primary is changed?
A: Yes. Any other domains you have mapped will still redirect to the primary domain after you change which one is primary.
Q: Can I have more than one “primary” domain?
A: No — only one domain can be designated at a time as your primary domain.
Q: Will email addresses tied to the old primary domain be affected?
A: Depends. If you use an email service tied to the domain (outside Rocketspark) then yes, you’ll want to verify that any email setup (MX records etc.) is properly configured for the new primary if needed. Rocketspark’s domain tools don’t manage email hosting.
