Creating links on your Rocketspark site is very simple. Read below to find out what links are and how to set them up.
What is a link?
A link (or hyperlink) is a text or image that, when clicked, will take you to another page on the internet. For example, this text right here (yep, that text marked in blue) is a link. Go ahead, click on it—it’ll take you to the Rocketspark homepage. That’s how links work.
Links are useful for two main reasons:
- Navigation: They help visitors to your website navigate around the site quickly and easily. Instead of having to rely solely on menus, they can simply click on the highlighted text or an image and be taken directly to another part of the website (or to a relevant external site).
- Search Rankings (SEO): They can help boost your website’s rankings in a search engine. This is the case with inbound links (i.e., links to your site or page). The links provide a pathway to lead search engines like Google to your content.
On Rocketspark websites you can make links in a variety of ways to suit the specific scenario, including text links, image links, slideshow links, and buttons. Read on to learn how to create each one of these link types.
NOTE: To add a link, you need to be logged into your Rocketspark Dashboard and be in “editor” mode (How? Move the slider at the top of the page over to “editor”). Once logged into editor mode, following the step-by-step instructions below.
How do I create a text link?
(To make this tour bigger, click the arrows on the right or zoom in)
- A text link is a snippet of text that, when clicked, will take you to another page or site. To add a text link: Hover over the text block you wish to add a link to and click the pencil icon. An “Edit text block” box will appear. (If you haven’t yet added the text, simply click “Add block” and proceed to the next step.)
- Highlight the text you want to be linked (click and drag your cursor over the desired text), then click the chain link icon immediately above the text box. A menu will appear.
- Select “Insert link”. A link box will appear.
-
Now you need to determine whether you’re creating an external, internal or email link:
- Website: A link to a separate website. To create, enter in the URL (i.e., website address) of the site (and page within that site) you want to link to.
- Page: A link to another page on the same website. To create, choose "Select a page”. Click on the page from your website from the drop-down you want to link to.
- Blog: A link to a specific blog post that you have created. To do this just select through the dropdown which blog you would like it to link to.
- Eccomerce: If you have a shop, you can link this through. You can select if you want to be linked through to a specific product, a category or a tag.
-
The next field is headed “Link text”. This is the anchor text—the “linked” words your user can click on. There may be pre-existing text here or it may be blank (depending on whether you’ve written pre-existing text or not), but you can edit it simply by typing directly into the field. We recommend using important search terms as this helps tell Google what the link is about and helps with your search rankings e.g., don’t just say “Click here” but say “click here to make your own website”
- Click “Save link”. You’ll be taken back to the “Edit text block” box. Your linked text should change colour and underlined when your cursor hovers over the new link.
-
To finalise, click “Save”. You have now created your text link.
