We would suggest to not ever turn your website offline once it goes live. There are several reasons for this, but the main one is so that there's no chance of Google coming by to visit your website (which they do every few weeks or so) during that downtime and then significantly impacting your rankings with them. Once it's live, just leave it online.
There are a few ways that you can edit the content on your website with little to no impact on what a visitor will see:
- If you plan to make large changes, a new page can be used. In the Manage Pages area, you can create a new page. Set this page offline; this way, any changes that you make to this page are not visible to anyone but yourself. Once you have the page ready to go live, you can turn it online and move it into position relative to your other pages.
- If you are simply editing a text region on a page, there is an option to preview what the block will look like before you confirm the changes that have been made. By doing this, your customers will not see any content changes until you click Save Changes.
- Another option is to try choosing an off-peak time to make some edits. You can view your Google Analytics to nail down a bit of a time frame around when that is, if you're not sure what time of the day/week is best.
