This guide explains the image file types you can upload to your website and options for converting images to the correct formats prior to uploading. These file types apply for your logo upload, slideshows and other images on your website.
If you get an error uploading an image message please check out this guide.
Supported image formats include
You can find out the file format by looking at the last 3-4 letters on the file name. (This is known as the extension.) For example, my-logo.jpg is a JPG format image.
- JPG
- JPEG
- PNG
- PNG 24 (Transparent background)
- SVG (picture block only) What is an SVG file? How to upload an SVG file to your website
- GIF (picture block or code block) How do I add GIFs to my website?
Common image formats we don't accept
- PDF - you can upload this via a file upload instead
- AI
- PSD
- EPS
- Bitmap
If your logo or image is in one of these formats you will find you won't be able to upload this picture directly to Rocketspark. Firstly it needs to be re-saved and converted to the correct format.
What format should I use?
- If your image is a photo or contains many colours and irregular patterns then JPG/JPEG is the best format.
- If your image has lots of solid colour areas or repeating gradients then PNG or GIF is the best format. We also support PNG 24 bit which allows transparent backgrounds. This lets the background colour on the page or feature area show through.
JPG vs PNG/GIF have a different compression style which can result in a smaller file size when used correctly. On top of this, we run all your images through the Rocketspark image engine to resize them specifically to be web safe but we keep the format the same.
For example, a 5mb JPG image would take a minute or so to download on slow connections so we re-save this image at around 50-200kb depending on how big it needs to be and how big it needs to show on the page.
How to re-save my image type to upload to Rocketspark?
If you have a tool like Photoshop on your computer you can easily convert your images by using the Save As or Export features.
If you don't have photoshop there are free online tools for opening and saving images you can use https://www.coolutils.com/online/image-converter/

CMYK/RGB Colours and DPI
Some images might appear with colour changes after being uploaded to Rocketspark. This is usually an issue if the image uploaded is using the CMYK colour model. This colour model is designed for printers. For screens, you want to get your images in an RGB model. Rocketspark will convert any CMYK images into RGB but as we may not have the same colour profile the colours can change during this transition.
Screen images also use 72 DPI, we will convert all uploaded images to use 72 DPI at the point of upload. It's recommended if you are saving images for upload to websites that they are RGB 72 DPI.
