To transfer your domain name to Rocketspark, you'll usually need a transfer code from your current domain provider (your registrar). This code is also called an auth code, EPP code or authorisation code. It works like a PIN that proves you're allowed to move the domain. This guide shows you how to get your code and what to do with it.
Getting your auth code or EPP key
Where you find your transfer code depends on who your domain is registered with. The steps below work for most providers.
Log in to the account where your domain is registered. If you're not sure who that is, our guide on finding your current domain registrar will help you find out.
Look for an option to request or view your transfer code. Each provider labels it differently. Common names include:
- Auth Code or Authorisation Code
- EPP Key or EPP Code
- Transfer Code or Transfer Key
If you can't find it, check your provider's help area or contact their support team and ask them to send it to you.
3. Some providers show the code on screen. Others email it to the contact email address on the domain. If you no longer have access to that email address, update it in your provider's account first, then request the code.
4. Enter this code into your Rocketspark dashboard when prompted for the Auth Code
.nz domain transfer codes (formerly UDAI)
Since November 2022, the transfer code for .nz domains is called an Authorisation Code. It replaced the old UDAI code, and any UDAI issued before then no longer works.
A .nz Authorisation Code:
- is 16 characters long
- uses only letters, numbers and hyphens
- expires after 30 days
- can't be looked up again once it's created, so if you've lost it, ask your provider for a new one
If your .nz transfer fails, the most common reason is that the code has expired or isn't in the right format. Ask your provider for a new code and try again.
.uk domains use an IPS tag instead
.uk domain names don't use a transfer code. Instead, you change the domain's IPS tag (a label that says which provider manages the domain) to Rocketspark's tag. Follow our guide on changing your IPS tag to transfer to Rocketspark.
Tips and things to watch out for
- Copy and paste the code rather than typing it, and check there are no extra spaces at the start or end.
- Some providers lock domains to stop unwanted transfers. If yours has a transfer lock, turn it off before you start.
- Treat your code like a password, and only share it with Rocketspark.
- Keep your domain active with your old provider until the transfer has finished.
Frequently asked questions
Is an EPP code the same as a transfer code?
Yes. Transfer code, auth code, authorisation code and EPP code are all different names for the same thing.
Is a UDAI the same as an authorisation code?
Yes. UDAI was the old name for .nz transfer codes. Since November 2022 they're called Authorisation Codes, and old UDAIs no longer work.
Why isn't my transfer code working?
The code may have expired, been typed incorrectly, or be in the wrong format. For .nz domains, check it's 16 characters and less than 30 days old. If you're unsure, ask your provider for a new code.
My registrar won't give me my transfer code. What can I do?
For .nz domains, providers aren't allowed to refuse or delay a transfer request. For any domain, contact your provider's support team first. If you're still stuck, get in touch with us and we'll help.
Will my website or email stop working during the transfer?
No, all the DNS records will remain the same. We do recommend checking the DNS records once the transfer is complete
